Outgoing SABC group CEO Peter Matlare is to take up his new position as an executive director at Vodacom SA on 1 April.
Vodacom Group chief communications officer Mthobi Tyamzashe confirmed this morning that Matlare would join the cellular network provider as commercial director.
The SABC board announced late yesterday that it had accepted Matlare`s request to leave before the expiry of his contract, although it said the date of Matlare`s departure had yet to be set.
This was to be done "at a date to be determined in consultation with the shareholder". However, Tyamzashe says he will move in April.
SABC chairman Eddie Funde says while Matlare`s contract ends in December this year, he had requested that he be released from the SABC before then because of the business opportunity at Vodacom.
Tyamzashe says Matlare`s background and experience in telecommunications, media and technology will make him a valuable member of Vodacom`s South African operational team.
There has been no official comment on earlier media speculation that Matlare`s resignation was linked to an internal spat.
Although Matlare could not be reached for comment, he says in a statement: "I have had a great time at the SABC, and the decision to leave was not an easy one."
