SABMiller extends Syspro platform into India

Johannesburg, 21 Jan 2003

The world's second largest brewer, SABMiller, has installed SYSPRO's ERP software at its recently launched Indian brewery, bringing to 13 the number of SABMiller sites running SYSPRO.

Derek Kemp, Business Information Systems Manager of SABMiller Africa and Asia, says it has been company strategy to standardise on SYSPRO software for a number of years. SABMiller runs SYSPRO in 12 African countries. When the decision was made to extend its operation into India, SYSPRO 6.0 was the obvious choice.

"Despite our longstanding experience of SYSPRO and its user-friendliness, we were still impressed by the ease with which our Indian associates adapted to the software," Kemp says.

SABMiller identified India as a key target market based primarily on the size of the population. Although only 5% of the population are drinkers, the core beer drinker segment of urban males between 20 and 34 consists of 54 million people and is expected to grow to 67.5 million by 2010.

"It was clear that SYSPRO 6.0 was the perfect fit for the breweriy's requirements," Kemp says. "We arranged for top management to visit our Tanzanian operation, and they were deeply impressed with the SYSPRO solution. Back in India, we loaded a demo version and I showed the management accountant how to use the basics - general ledger, journal entries and so on. When I returned the next morning I discovered that he had spent the night teaching himself the system through the online help facility, and no longer needed my help!"

SABMiller and SYSPRO dealer InfoSyst implemented the software at Mysore Breweries within 2.5 weeks, and the roll-out to the remaining breweries is currently under way. It will be completed by the end of the year.

Commenting on SABMiller's future plans in India, Kemp says the organisation remains on the acquisition trail and will expand its operation further.

"SYSPRO 6.0 is a critical element of our business model, which is built around standardisation, transfer of knowledge and skills, and system ownership," he says.
