Safmarine has licensed and installed Control-O/PC, New Dimension`s console automation solution. Supplied by local New Dimension representative Software Futures, Control-O/PC takes Safmarine a step further towards its goal of full operational automation in its data centre. Safmarine made headlines last year when it downsized from an IBM mainframe to a Hewlett-Packard-based Unix environment. As part of this move, says technical services manager Vincent Rabie, Safmarine had to ensure it maintained and improved its service level agreement while continuing to reduce costs. Control-O, running under OS/2, monitors every aspect of Safmarine`s 100-plus batch jobs each evening. It reports by exception and if any batch job fails it notifies specified operators through a cellular call. "We can also call in and through synthesised voice be advised on the status of the most recently completed job, or the most recent difficulty experienced," says Rabie. "This ability means we really don`t need to have operators on site at night." Safmarine is already a significant user of New Dimension technology, having previously installed Control-M for job scheduling and Enterprise Control Station for single-console management. "The success of Control-O at Safmarine again underscores the industry-wide move to operations automation," says Software Futures systems management MD Allen Lewis. "It is not possible to manage today`s complex computer environments without this degree of automation."
