Sahara to debut five-in-one gizmo

Johannesburg, 14 Jan 2004

Sahara is to soon introduce an enhanced memory stick that it says can do just about everything except make telephone calls.

The eDVR, a memory stick with five functions in a single device, is to be introduced to the local market by early next month.

Sahara's eDVR was unveiled in Midrand yesterday by EMEA regional manager Gordon Buitendach, who demonstrated the compact memory stick-style device that combines a camera, video recorder, sound recorder, portable storage and Webcam functions.

The quick live demonstration of the eDVR's abilities would have convinced the most sceptical of the device's ease of use and the quality of video and audio reproduction. Photographs and digital were easily recorded, downloaded using a USB cable, and displayed.

The 128MB Sahara eDVRs have the capacity to store 10 minutes of recorded video with sound, two hours of recorded sound, and 1 000 photographs. At low resolution, these figures can be doubled.

Video sampling is at 30 frames per second, audio sampling is at 11KHz, and better quality photographs have a resolution of 640x480.

The minimum system requirements for the eDVR include a Pentium II 266MHz processor and 64MB or 128MB of RAM, depending on the operating system being used.

The eDVR comes with the required to run all five applications. Users can switch functions using the mode button and LCM display. A three-colour LED also indicates whether the eDVR is taking a movie clip, recording a movie clip, or taking a picture.

The eDVR is powered by a built-in lithium battery, which can be recharged by connecting the device to a computer.

The only thing that is not apparent from first glance is the durability of the eDVR.

It will sell at a recommended price of around R800.
