Stella Vista Technologies achieved a net profit of R413 000 for the six months to February, compared with the loss of R5.74 million incurred in the same period of the previous year.
CEO Muris Tabakovic says a "remarkable" increase in sales contributed to the improvement, with revenue up 73.4% to R9.67 million from R5.58 million previously.
Stella Vista designs multimedia communication systems, including displays, control equipment and software for several applications. Its products include scoreboards, video display screens and combined text and graphic messaging displays.
Tabakovic says the company was very active in the sports market during the period, with video displays being supplied to the Karnataka State cricket ground in Bangalore, India, and for a basketball arena in Novi Sad, Serbia and Montenegro.
Other contracts included supplying a video display at the Abu Dhabi cricket stadium and flight information displays at the Westralia Airports Corporation in Perth, Australia.
Export sales for the period amounted to R4.4 million.
An operating profit of R288 000 compares with a previous loss of R7.51 million, while headline earnings of 0.3c a share compares with a loss of 4.17c a share in the previous comparable period.
Headline earnings were at the high end of the range forecast when the group issued a trading statement earlier this month.
The improved performance translated into an increase in cash on the balance sheet, from R232 000 at the end of last August to R1.82 million at the end of February.
The Stella Vista share closed at 8c on the JSE yesterday, down 1c or 11.1% from the previous close.
