Samsung plans to launch mobile TV, services and with the new Galaxy S WiFi 5.0.

In partnership with the International DMB Advancement Group (IDAG), Samsung will make the device and services available in SA, Germany, the Netherlands, UK, Switzerland and Norway. A local launch date is yet to be confirmed, but Samsung says it will be “soon”.

Samsung says the combination of broadcasting and Internet functionality will strengthen radio and TV programmes, and open them up to a broader audience.

“We expect that Samsung's entry into this area will inspire new fans of digital radio and mobile TV,” says president of IDAG, Gunnar Garfors.

Samsung SA MD, Deon Liebenberg, says: “Built-in DMB/DAB+ provides excellent radio and TV experiences on the go, and Samsung SA is pleased to engage with DMB to provide digital TV opportunities to more South African consumers.”

DMB/DAB+ is the de facto standard for digital radio and mobile television on four continents.

Founder and chairman of MobileTV SA and board member of IDAG, Dr Mothobi Muloatse, says: “This association, with a global icon of Samsung's calibre, is testimony to MobileTV's ability to be innovative and ground-breaking in the competitive digital broadcasting space unfolding in SA. MobileTV is poised to redefine mobile digital broadcasting interactively."

Digital radio via DAB/DAB+ or mobile TV via DMB is currently available in more than 40 countries globally, and is expected to be extended to other countries.
