Gauteng's e-toll system was temporarily shut down this afternoon when the SA National Agency's (Sanral's) Central Operations Centre (COC) had to be evacuated after a suspicious envelope containing a white substance was found on the premises.
The Gauteng Freeway Management, including the newly-implemented open road tolling system, operates out of the COC, which is based in Midrand.
Sanral says security acted immediately to the find, notifying the Tshwane Hazardous Material Unit.
The centre's electricity supply was then shut down and the building evacuated, says the agency.
"This disruption will affect the Gauteng highway e-tolling system and we apologise to motorists for any inconvenience which this will cause."
Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona said in a statement following the incident: "Our priority is to ensure the safety of the people who work at the COC.
"We take this matter very seriously and condemn this type of action in the strongest possible terms. It is tantamount to sabotage and borders on a very serious crime."
