SAOUG sets date for conference, announces preliminary agenda

Johannesburg, 03 May 2004

The annual South African Oracle User Group conference will take place at Sun City from October 17-19. Extending the SAOUG commitment to providing business value to delegates, preliminary topics that are likely to be tackled at this year's event include Oracle on Linux, Grid Computing and Oracle Applications.

Anne Duggan, Oracle SA's country customer services manager, says: "Oracle users are increasingly discovering the power of new technologies such as Grid Computing, and maturing platforms such as Linux, while Oracle itself has been working hard to deliver new applications that provide customers with richly functional and highly reliable enterprise solutions."

Oracle's commitment to Linux began in 1999 with the first commercial database on Linux. Today, the company is the only major software vendor to collaborate with and provide first-line support for distributions from Red Hat and Novell/SUSE, while all Oracle products are available on Linux. Grid Computing is the coordinated use of a large number of servers and storage acting as a single computer. The advantages of this technology include solving the issue of spikes in demand and the cost of maintaining excess capacity, as computing power is available when needed it. Grids are built with low-cost modular components, so companies can start small and preserve their investment as business grows.

Dominating discussions in boardrooms and in technology publications, these issues will be tackled by Oracle experts both from within the organisation and by independent specialists drawn from businesses using Oracle technologies, says Bryan Roestorf, SAOUG chairman.

"An independent organisation, the SAOUG is nevertheless working closely with Oracle to deliver an event packed with topical and highly relevant business content, with additional issues being tackled by a selection of local and international experts," he explains.

"Every year the SAOUG draws on the expertise of seasoned experts working in the field to deliver papers to improve knowledge, skills and understanding of Oracle solutions as they perform in real business environments. The highlight of the SAOUG year, the conference provides an environment of information exchange, and is an ideal forum for SAOUG members to improve their use of Oracle technology within their specific environments," he concludes.
