SAS acquires RiskAdvisory to enhance its utility risk offerings

By SAS Institute
Johannesburg, 30 Jan 2004

With risk becoming a critical issue for all corporations worldwide, SAS Institute is boosting its capacity in this arena. The organisation recently acquired a Canada-based company, RiskAdvisory, a leading provider of risk management consulting and software.

Peter Venn, Strategic Account Manager for Eskom, says the RiskAdvisory software augments existing SAS Risk Management solutions that address specific business challenges for different sectors, by adding specific utility intellectual capital.

"With this acquisition, SAS extends its risk management expertise and software offerings as the addition of RiskAdvisory technology complements SAS's existing risk management solutions," he explains.

"This is the seventh acquisition by SAS since 2000, demonstrating SAS's acquisition strategy of enhancing its existing capabilities with market-leading technology and domain expertise."

According to Venn, SAS has acquired two software solutions through RiskAdvisory: Energy BookRunner and TradeBlotter. When coupled with SAS's powerful analytic risk management software solution, SAS Risk Dimensions, the new offerings provide utility organisations with a complete risk platform encompassing the front, middle and back offices.

Its extensible framework which comes with the option to plug in needed functionality, enables organisations to implement a SAS risk management system quickly and cost-effectively. This modular approach supports customisation, flexibility and increasing levels of analytic sophistication enabling a company to selectively extend the platform to match its changing risk management needs.

"Coming just six months after our June acquisition of OpRisk Analytics, this new addition of risk resources and specialised software assets underscores our strong commitment to the risk management market," says Venn. "RiskAdvisory brings to SAS some of the most concentrated expertise in risk management. This expertise complements and strengthens SAS's world-class risk management software and solidifies our leadership in the risk management area."
