SA's competitiveness standing is losing ground, despite significant government investments into infrastructure ahead of the Fifa World Cup, in June and July this year. That's according to the latest Global Competitiveness Rankings, from the World Economic Forum.

The international report, which was released yesterday, shows SA's standing deteriorating by nine places from 45 to 54 out of 139 countries investigated by the organisation.

Although the report highlights labour market efficiency (with a standing of 97), university enrolment rate (99) and as areas the country needs to prioritise, closer scrutiny reveals SA's ability to compete on a technological readiness basis, at 73, is far from what it should be.

The country's telecommunication infrastructure also weighs heavily on SA's total infrastructure standing, with fixed-line scoring at 98 and mobile 73.

The World Economic Forum's global IT report, released earlier this year, placed SA at 62 out of 133 countries.
