Capetonians Olivia Burton (15) and Wilbur Hough (23) have been named SA's fastest texters.
Burton and Hough competed against six other qualifiers from across the country at the National Championships of the LG Mobile World Cup, held last week.
The two texters were awarded R50 000 and R20 000 respectively and will head off to New York in January next year, to represent SA in the LG Mobile World Cup Championships.
Burton came out tops with 245 points while Hough finished 23 points behind Burton. Third place went to Sharlene Dziire of Northgate in Johannesburg.
The South African leg of the competition drew a total 77 800 entries - the oldest being a 55 year-old man while the youngest entrant was an 11 year-old boy. The LG Mobile World Cup will see players from 24 countries competing against one another to achieve the title of being the fastest texter.
Mindsports SA, an affiliate of the South African Confederation of Sport and Olympic Committee, certified the fastest texter record in SA for the first time, which was set by Hough by typing a 133-character sentence in two minutes and four seconds.
At the World Championship to be held in New York, the South African team will have the chance to win the ultimate prize of $100 000 and challenge the current Guinness World Records established by Pedro Matias of Portugal last year.
Earlier this year, Natalie Witoslowski and Kgothatso Moerane jetted off to New York City to compete in the previous LG Mobile World Cup Championship. They were both awarded national colours for representing their country.
