As we all know, the world is going green through the use of alternative power generation technologies, by reducing power consumption, driving around in hybrid cars, and so on. The ICT world has gone green, and SecureData is now able to help its clients reduce their power costs through the adoption of Shavlik's Power Management capabilities.
“Shavlik has introduced Power Management to facilitate this, which powers off unused computers at night and on weekends, in a move that can save up to R500 in energy costs per machine per year,” commented Phil Thompson, Product Manager at SecureData for Shavlik products.
“The goals of green IT often conflict with the needs of IT administrators to deploy critical updates,” continued Thompson. “Shavlik eliminates this conflict by joining Shavlik NetChk Protect Plus Power Management in a unified platform so that IT administrators can power off computers when not in use, and wake them up for scheduled maintenance. In 30 minutes or less, users can manage their patches and energy costs.”
Shavlik has leveraged its industry leading agentless technology to allow users to remotely power on machines that are in their local network. This Wake-on-LAN capability enables businesses to minimise energy costs but maximise of the number of computers critical patches.
With the NetChk Protect and Wake-on-LAN:
* Machines can be powered off when not in use, then activated for a maintenance window.
* Users can create separate power policies for different segments/AD groups on their network.
* User impact is minimised by powering machines off at night and on weekends and then powering them on for the start of the work day, eg, turning off all desktops at 19h00 every night and powering them on at 06h30 ever morning.
* The user has the ability to stop the scheduled power down.
* IT maximises its ability to manage and maintain the health of systems on the network; no more missed patch cycles because a machine was powered off.
“A typical example is as follows,” concluded Thompson. “A client has 700 machines on their network(s). Of these machines there are 500 desktops, 100 laptops and 100 servers. The laptops are mobile and manage their own power. The servers need to stay up 99.98% of the time so can be powered down manually if necessary. However, by managing the power utilisation of the 500 desktops, the client can save an estimated R250 000 per annum.”
