SBCS selects NSI Double-Take as data replication solution of choice

Johannesburg, 14 Aug 2001

Symetrix Business Continuity Services (SBCS), the newly formed disaster recovery business unit in the Symetrix Information Technologies Group, has selected Double-Take from NSI Software as its preferred solution for data replication, availability and protection. The product is supplied to the South African channel by Infogenics Consulting.

SBCS has already tested and implemented the product for the establishment of a hot remote disaster recovery site for a customer in the financial services industry and plans to use Double-Take for similar implementations in the future.

Says David Sack, Manager, Symetrix Business Continuity Services at Symetrix: "A few minutes of downtime following a systems outage can translate into reams of lost data and unrecoverable revenues. The Double-Take software allows us to protect our clients from these risks by allowing them to recover from a disaster within seconds without any loss of information.

"The product is easy to install, configure, and manage. Apart from the product's strengths, we were also impressed by the level of service and support delivered by Infogenics."

The Double-Take product monitor changes to files as they occur and replicates them to one or more servers over a standard local or wide area network. This ensures that data is always protected, with an up-to-date copy available in an offsite location.

NSI's Sequential Transfer Asynchronous Replication (Star) technology is at the heart of the product. Star follows the same write sequence within and across multiple files, providing complete data integrity at all times.

The asynchronous replication technology provides a combination of source and target-based queuing abilities that allow the server to continue processing while replication occurs. This approach minimises the burden of data replication on the server and network.

Double-Take's failover capabilities allow a secondary server to kick in automatically when the primary server fails following a disaster. Because Double-Take requires only standard TCP/IP connectivity, replication can be maintained in real-time, without any geographic limitations.

Infogenics Consulting, a high-end software consulting and sales organisation, was established last year to sell the products distributed by Sunbelt Software, a American supplier of utility software, into the South African market. The company has a strong focus on products and services that plug the gap in the Microsoft Windows NT and 2000 environments for industrial-strength backup, security, fault-tolerance, and high availability solutions.

Chan Reddy, General Manager, at Infogenics Consulting, says the company has already made strong in-roads into the South African market with Double-Take, its flagship product.

"We have invested heavily in building our staff's skills in the Sunbelt product range by sending them on international training courses with Sunbelt and its principal suppliers. In addition, we have the ability to bring skills into SA for select projects, as we did with SBCS," says Reddy.
