Schlumberger chooses CACH'E to help combat mobile phone fraud

SchlumbergerSema, the IT division of Schlumberger and supplier of IT consulting, systems integration, network and infrastructure services, has migrated its EIR (Equipment Identity Register) application for mobile operators to the CACH'E post-relational database from InterSystems.

EIR enables mobile network providers to "switch off" stolen mobile phones even if the SIM is changed. Supplied as a turnkey solution, it means that telecoms companies can fight phone theft actively, deterring the thief and reassuring their customers.

The decision to change databases came when the previous database system would no longer support the solution`s OpenVMS operating environment. CACH'E runs on most major platforms, including Windows, OpenVMS, Linux and Unix, and has shown a commitment to continuing support for OpenVMS.

The move follows the success of the SchlumbergerSema CIMS (Consolidated Information Management System) SMS tracking application, which also runs on CACH'E and is currently generating considerable international interest.

"From our experience of working with InterSystems South Africa, we knew that CACH'E`s technology gives us the speed we need - with CIMS it was running 10 to 15 times faster on comparable hardware - while still enabling us to offer applications that are cost-effective and highly marketable," says Terry McCabe, VP of SchlumbergerSema Montreal Telecom Product Centre.

CACH'E`s multidimensional data structures eliminate processing overheads and result in faster running applications. Because CACH'E is so fast - tests show it can deliver rapid in-memory search performance between 20 and 100 times faster than well known relational databases - it uses less memory and supports more users on the same hardware platform, lowering the overall cost per user.

This reduced hardware footprint results in cost-effective solutions, maximising return on investment (ROI). "CACH'E`s diminished footprint, using either Unix or new telco-grade Linux systems, means that the price point falls, as does total cost of ownership, thereby increasing the possibility of EIR winning new customers," comments Henry Adams, MD of InterSystems SA.

He adds that CACH'E`s design offers clients the flexibility to interrogate and report on data in a myriad ways, such as presenting Web-based information to customer service operatives.
