School replaces textbooks with tablets
Students who started the year at Grandview were surprised to see that, instead of the usual 45.45kgs of textbooks, they were all issued a Kyros Coby Android Tablet.
Many school districts incorporate laptops and tablets in classrooms, but Grandview is paving the way for ditching paper textbooks in favour of digital tools and allowing students to take the tablets home, says STL Today.
The tablets will be used to take tests, do homework and complete assigned readings using applications and programs such as Moodle, a free online classroom tool. The tablets will also contain free online textbooks and digital copies of textbooks. An Internet filter blocks many sites, including pornography and Facebook.
Students will keep their tablets throughout their high school careers, then keep them when they graduate, according to CBS St.Louis.
