The DOC will from next week hand over three more computer labs to underprivileged schools.

The Department of Communications (DOC) has provided three more schools with cyber lab equipment.

Deputy minister of communications Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams will hand over a computer laboratory and 30 tablets to Fumana High School in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.

The lab will be equipped with 20 computers, while Huawei is sponsoring 30 tablets and equipment for connectivity. The connectivity set-up and configuration of the computers are supplied by IT Master, with Intel providing training for the teachers.

The lab was commissioned as part of the World Telecommunications & Information Society Day commemorations in May, when two more school computer labs were handed over by the department.

In another partnership with Huawei, the DOC will also sponsor cyber lab equipment at two schools in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo, respectively. Each school will be provided with 30 Huawei media pads, three 3G routers, a server, a 3G card, and a 3G SIM data bundle card valid for one year. The combined cost of the sponsorship will be approximately R300 000. A date for the official handover is not yet known.

Huawei Technologies SA CEO Wilson Liu says the company's partnership with the DOC forms part of its commitment to continue cooperating with local to support connectivity and development in SA.

"In the 21st century, every school, and every scholar in SA has a right to be connected, as the country is an ICT hub in the region. This can only be made possible through strategic partnerships between both private and public sectors in the country," says Liu.
