Apple`s sales to Cape education institutions increased by 40% this year, says reseller Digicape Communications, with sales being driven by affordability and the need to teach on commercially-used graphic systems.
Digicape director Gaynor MacArthur says her company has sold more than R1.6 million worth of equipment to three of the Western Cape`s five tertiary education institutions, namely Stellenbosch University, Cape Technikon and the Peninsula Technikon. There was also a sale to the AAA School of Advertising.
"Rand strength has certainly made Apple`s equipment far more affordable, but the institutions also know they have to teach students on the systems that are employed commercially. Apple has about 90% of the graphics market," she says.
According to MacArthur, sales of Apple equipment this year showed a R400 000 deal with Cape Technikon, and another with just under R300 000 to Peninsula Technikon.
Stellenbosch University has bought R600 000 worth of equipment and the AAA School of Advertising has placed orders worth R300 000, she maintains.
MacArthur says it is difficult to say if the sales increase will be maintained in the coming year, but that so far signs look promising.
