SCS lands SAA e-learning project

Johannesburg, 23 Sep 2002

Safmarine Computer Services (SCS), a leading IT business solutions provider, has been contracted to provide South African Airways (SAA) with an e-learning solution in preparation for the airline's new A340 Airbus aircraft acquisition.

The deal was signed after SCS concluded a successful proof of concept of IBM's Mindspan Solutions, an end-to-end e-learning solution. SCS was selected from a shortlist of six potential suppliers.

"E-learning provides the perfect solution for this business application, enabling students to tailor learning sessions irrespective of location and training timetable. The Learning Management System (LMS) tracks individual scoring and assesses progress at different levels LMS generates standard reports which makes administration of the learning very user friendly," says SCS E-learning manager, Tertia Albertyn.

"As we operate within a highly regulated environment, we were looking for a provider with AICC (Aviation Industry CBT Committee) certification, a prerequisite of the airline and stringent evaluation tools. Both of which SCS could provide," says George Warren, SAA Senior Information Officer: Flight Operations.

SCS is the first and only accredited African vendor of IBM's end-to-end e-learning suite, Mindspan Solutions, with market-leading technology, LearningSpace.

"Our short-term objective is to use LearningSpace technology for the Airbus e-learning project, but we'll continue using it in the future for our hard (medical, safety) and soft skills (communications skills) training for flight deck and cabin crew alike," added Warren.

Commencing in mid-October, the programme will run over a 12-month period, to ensure that by September next year 3 300 SAA flight deck and cabin crew members will have received training through e-learning.
