Safmarine Computer Services (SCS) a leading IT business solutions provider, has been selected as one of four finalists in the ninth annual Lotus Beacon Awards, in the category of Best Learning Solution, representing not only SA but the entire continent, as Africa's only finalist.
Judged by a team of leading industry journalists and analysts, the 2003 Beacon Awards recognise IBM PartnerWorld Business Partners who have excelled at providing quality products, innovative solutions and superior services to customers based on Lotus software technologies.
Best E-Learning Solution, a relatively new award category, was developed to reflect an incredibly rapid growth market, especially in these days of just-in-time learning, lifelong learning, combined with travel restrictions. Many of the solutions nominated in e-learning have saved corporations millions of dollars.
SCS was nominated for an e-learning solution implemented at South African Airways (SAA) in preparation for the airline's new A340 Airbus aircraft acquisition. E-learning provided a winning solution for this business application, enabling students to tailor learning sessions irrespective of location and training timetable. By September 2003, 3 300 SAA flight deck and cabin crew members would have received training through e-learning.
"We're very excited to have been nominated for such an esteemed award, especially in the e-learning category which is a relatively new area. There is a global move towards using e-learning as part of a blended approach in delivering successful lifelong learning. As the local supplier of a global market-leading product, we combine best of breed technology with the necessary know-how of local conditions, to provide award-winning e-learning solutions for the local market," says Tertia Albertyn, SCS e-learning manager.
Judging criteria stipulate that the winning solution in the category of Best Learning Solution must demonstrate how Lotus Learning technologies have enabled an organisation's value chain, increasing effectiveness and yielding a measurable return on investment.
The 2003 Lotus Beacon Award winners will be announced on 27 January at IBM's annual Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Florida. SCS is competing against AIT Work Group Technology Sdn Bhd (Malaysia) www.patimas.com; Multimedia Marketing.Com www.multimediamarketing.com (UK); and Nanfor Iberica www.cursosweb.com (Spain).
