Seagate Software adds enhancements to Seagate Backup Exec

New agents boost database protection for Microsoft`s Exchange Server and SQL Server

Seagate Software, the pioneer of Enterprise Information Management (EIM) has made enhancements to two of its agents for Windows NT: Seagate Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft SQL Server.

Offering increased performance and backup flexibility, these agents, combined with the new version of Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT, provide customers with a high level of data protection. "Database protection is fast becoming one of the most significant elements for today`s enterprises - especially for databases such as Exchange and SQL Server," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager for MEA at Seagate Software, Network and Storage Management Group.

"Data, right down to individual mailboxes and tables, must be instantly available without impacting the entire enterprise. Our new agents deliver the protection and flexibility required by these applications."

In addition to offering full database protection of information store and directory service data, support is now available for individual mailbox and folder backups and restores. The agent offers users the ability to backup and restore embedded e-mail and OLE objects within messages to their original state.

This includes the backup and restore of all Exchange message attributes, including who a message was sent to or received from, when it was sent or received, whether it was read or unread as well as reminder-prompt

information.

It also provides backup and restore for mailbox attributes, such as calendars, contacts, notes task lists and journal information for speedy recovery of individual mailbox data.

Versions 4.x and 5.x of Microsoft Exchange Server are also supported. Users, however, have the ability to backup and restore individual SQL database tables and complete databases while on-line to maximise information availability.

Designed to offer superior client/server flexibility, the new SQL agent features faster performance using SQL Server`s multi-pipe database backup capabilities to backup and restore data to a single drive. It also offers remote and local management of SQL Server backups for administration ease and database consistency, checking for increased data reliability.

Van Noordwyk says that by offering enhanced protection and flexibility for these vital servers, the software development house is streamlining customer restore processes to facilitate the easy access and availability of information consistently throughout the enterprise infrastructure.
