Seagate Software defines backup standard for NetWare

Industry`s first backup solution for NetWare 5 and Novell Storage Services

Johannesburg, 19 Nov 1998

Enterprise Information Management pioneer (EIM), Seagate Software, has released the first available backup solution for the upcoming release of Novell NetWare.

"Backup solutions and storage management are critical requirements for business networks," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager for MEA at Seagate Software, Network and Storage Management Group. Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare provides the valuable data protection services necessary to safeguard NetWare 5 network environments.

"With the growth of mission-critical network servers, our goal is to provide secure storage management and high data availability for business information," Van Noordwyk says.

"Version 8.0 of Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare is designed to provide enterprise data protection for any number of NetWare servers and any size NetWare directory," says Stafford Masie, corporate business strategist and business development manager, Novell SA.

"NetWare still enjoys the dominant market share in regards to network operating systems and we expect most of our clients will upgrade to Version 5 which is expected in September. This announcement will ensure that we can deliver a complete solution to our existing and prospective clients running business critical information on their file servers," he says.

Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare is a high-performance data protection solution with several enhancements over earlier versions including:

  • Full support for Novell NetWare 5 and Novell Storage Services - Data protection is secured no matter how the network is configured and Novell SMS, Target Service Agents and Novell NDS are fully supported;
  • Seagate Working Set Backup - Protects files and applications used in a normal workday or other user-configurable period of time. By backing up the "working set" of data, administrators can quickly restore and bring systems online faster. Integrating with the Seagate Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option further automates restoration and gets the server back online in the event of a failure;
  • Barcode reader and media portal support - With the new Autoloader Option, barcode reader and media portal support makes inventory of the data fast and management of the media easier. Managing and monitoring large amounts of data with high-end library systems and high-volume data sets is automated; and
  • Multi-platform centralised management - Using Seagate ExecView, a storage management console, administrators can monitor backup and restore operations from a single console.

Continuing to expand its features, Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare automates network backups through a scheduler providing simple unattended operation. Performance is further improved by minimising network traffic and automating the backup of remote servers using distributed processing and source compression.
