Storage management solutions provider, Seagate Software, has released its Open File Option for Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare with support for NetWare 4.x, effectively offering uninterrupted data protection for network environments any time of day or night.
"Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare Open File Option provides integrated protection of active e-mail, database and other data files - even while information is being entered or changed by users - for reliable data security and integrity," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager for MEA at Seagate Software, Network and Storage Management Group (NSMG).

The Open File Option is completely integrated into Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare. This allows the user to simply select to use or not to use the open-file technology. With the Open File Option enabled, Seagate Backup Exec creates and backs up a point-in-time snapshot of the disc volume and eliminates the need for manual grouping of files or time-consuming configuration. Seagate Backup Exec accesses the point-in-time snapshot for backup purposes, while still allowing users access to their files. Dynamic changes to the original data can still take place since the backup is being made from the point-in-time snapshot.
"Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare Open File Option supports application-level data protection to provide maximum reliability, performance and ease-of-use," says Van Noordwyk.
The software provides advanced features such as the new Seagate Working Set Backup, advanced barcode reader and media portal support, multi-platform centralised management and Intelligent Disaster Recovery. In addition, it fully supports Novell Storage Management Services (SMS), Target Service Agents and Novell Directory Services (NDS).
The new application also automates network backups through a comprehensive scheduler, providing easy unattended operation. With Seagate Software Agent Accelerator technology, performance is further improved by minimising network traffic and automating the backup of remote servers using distributed processing and source compression. In addition to the Seagate Software Backup Exec for NetWare Open File Option, Seagate Software provides native database backup agents for Oracle8 databases.
