Seagate Software helps Tellumat cut costs

Improved control over distributed IT resources enables the re-deployment of valuable manpower

Following its recently publicised management buyout, Cape Town-based Tellumat has rationalised the cost of managing its distributed PC network by installing 1000 seats of Seagate WinLAND.

Warren Harper, IT support manager for the local communications equipment manufacturer, cites the primary purpose of implementing Seagate Software`s hardware and software inventory tool was to free up precious IT skills for deployment elsewhere in the organisation. "Before Seagate WinLAND we were forced to do `sneaker-net` audits - an activity which was both tedious and inefficient," he says.

Tellumat is now able to monitor hardware and software changes on each of its 1000 distributed PCs almost instantaneously. "If memory or a hard disk fails or is removed, network administrators are notified almost immediately and action can be taken quickly," he explains.

"Regardless of whether a PC is connected to our network via modem or LAN card, we can track it throughout the organisation - wherever it moves," he adds.

According to Harper, Seagate WinLAND has also assisted with Y2K compliance testing. "Part of the package is a BIOS test which indicates whether or not the hardware will survive the switch over to the year 2000. This helped us to budget for hardware replacement ahead of time and amortise the cost of that part of the exercise over a longer period."

Harper says the Seagate WinLAND implementation also enabled a consolidation of IT manpower resources within the Company. "The Tellumat IT shop is running considerably leaner since the installation," he says. "The current lack of IT resources in the local market makes it important that companies maximise the skills they have," says Wayne Bird, director at Networks Unlimited, a local Seagate Software business partner. "Many IT managers have found that deployment of labour-saving tools such as Seagate WinLAND is an effective way to accomplish this," he reports.

Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager for MEA, Seagate Software, Network and Storage Management Group, agrees. "The primary motivation for implementing any of the components of the Seagate Desktop Management Suite (DMS) - of which Seagate WinLAND is one - is for IT to regain control of the corporate desktop," he says.

"Quite apart from the fact that this helps to curtail theft, it also enables improved management of distributed computing resources, allowing the full benefits of the investment in IT to be realised."
