Seagate Software redefines enterprise storage management

Seagate Software expands COM-based architecture to deliver technology integration

Seagate Software, the pioneer of Enterprise Information Management (EIM), has announced enhancements to Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT.

"With the growth expectation for Windows NT, a reliable data protection solution for this problem is strategic to business success," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager for MEA at Seagate Software, Network and Storage Management Group.

Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT is the first storage solution based on Microsoft`s COM (Component Model Architecture) architecture, a modular-based software implementation. This architecture is the foundation for the integration of Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT with other Seagate Software products. These include the Agent for Exchange Server, Agent for SQL Server, Seagate Client Exec (automated client data protection) and Seagate Manage Exec (proactive server health monitoring).

"Storage management is increasingly important with the continued adoption of NT in large scale enterprise environments on a global basis. With these enhancements Seagate Software offers a comprehensive storage and management administrative solution built upon the COM model," says van Noordwyk.

Seagate Software is further redefining backup strategies with the addition of the Working Set Backup into the daily backup routine. Having the data secure is key, but getting the most needed files back to the users quickly reduces downtime.

Working Set Backup protects files and applications used in a normal workday or other user-configurable period of time. By backing up just the "working set" of data, administrators can quickly restore that data and bring systems online faster. Integrating with the Seagate Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option further automates system restores and gets the server back online in the event of a failure.

With the virus protection built in to this version, data is first scanned for infected files. If an infected file is detected, the software cleans the file ensuring that clean data is written to media. To further ensure protection, automatic monthly reminders from within Backup Exec prompt users to a link on Seagate Software`s Web site to download the most current virus signatures.

Seagate Backup Exec`s monitoring console offers users the additional flexibility of centralised enterprise backup monitoring for both for Windows NT and NetWare servers simultaneously. "Loaded on either a Windows NT server or a Windows 95/98 client, administrators can monitor all scheduled, active and completed backup operations to ensure compliance with company data protection standards and identify backup operations that require attention," says van Noordwyk.

Remote access support for Windows NT and NetWare servers allows administrators to monitor their complete enterprise from anywhere on the network, including remote site servers. Further flexibility is provided by the ability to create "server groups" which allows network administrators to select and monitor only the backup servers they desire, resulting in more effective enterprise monitoring operations.

The new version of Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT also includes:

  • Expanded language support, for a total of eight native languages including English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Italian and Portuguese;
  • Enhanced tape reader functionality to enable restores from tapes created with Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT Workstation, Microsoft Windows 98 and Seagate Backup Exec Desktop 98 (QIC 113 tapes) as well as Seagate Storage Exec, Seagate Storage Manager, Seagate Backup Director and Novell Sbackup (SIDF tapes); and
  • "Designed for Microsoft BackOffice" certification for the base product, Seagate Backup Exec and options.

Seagate Backup Exec for Windows NT also features Seagate Software`s Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option, Advanced Device and Media Management, Agent Accelerator performance technology, integrated reporting with Seagate Crystal Reports and an easy-to-use wizard-based interface, Seagate Backup Exec Assistant.
