Search engine tackles global warming

Ads4Trees is hoping to plant 50 million trees in the next five years and create at least 5 000 sustainable jobs.

In line with this goal, the search engine and pay-per-click ad network has committed to planting one tree for every 500 searches a user enters on its Web site. Ads4Trees has also committed to plant 16 trees for every R1 000 spent on its pay-per-click ad network. The company adds that its servers run on 100% renewable energy.

According to Ads4Trees, deforestation is one of the greatest contributors to excess carbon in the atmosphere. The company argues that because trees remove carbon from the atmosphere, planting more trees will reduce the amount of carbon even further and reduce global warming.

The company says both Google and Bing power its search results.

Arthur Goldstuck, MD of World Wide Worx, says that if the site has a substantial amount of traffic, this is potentially an exciting proposition.

However, he points out that while people have become more conscious of green issues, they do not associate their Web behaviour with these issues. He argues that people will not use a search engine because of its green commitments, but will base their decisions on which search engine delivers the best results instead.
