Communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has confirmed the extension of Sentech CEO Dr Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane's contract for another two years. The extension is effective from 1 April 2006.
Mokone-Matabane joined Sentech on 1 March 2001. She led the company through a period of significant challenges, resulting in Sentech being awarded "Most Innovative ICT Company in Africa" at the 2005 African ICT Achievers Awards.
Mokone-Matabane says Sentech will be a different company in 2006. "Planning for the digital migration will be finalised and the company will begin with the roll-out," she says.
However, Thabo Komane, a manager from the CEO's office, cautions that people should not have unrealistic expectations of the process.
"People must remember that this is a long process and it's going to take years to complete. But we are excited with the start," he says.
Sentech will continue to seek funding in order to expand its broadband wireless provision and grow its presence in Africa, Komane says. It will also focus on the strategy and implementation of the Federation of International Football Association's needs for World Cup Soccer in 2010.
Komane believes Mokone-Matabane has accomplished much in her tenure, with the next two years bringing more achievements.
"She has led the company to change from a being broadcast signal distributor to a telecommunications company," he says.
The shift in focus has resulted in increased visibility as the company no longer services broadcasters only but provides services directly to customers.
