Server market sees rebound

The Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) server market has returned to growth in 2010's opening quarter, with HP and Dell capitalising on the rebound, reports Channel Web.

IDC's EMEA Quarterly Server Tracker reports the first quarter server shipments across the region were up 16.4% annually to 560 000, while revenue rose 7.4% to reach $3.2 billion.

The research firm stresses the overall figures still compare unfavourably to pre-recession levels, adding that in 2008, the EMEA server market was worth $4.4 billion in the fourth quarter.

Need for Speed goes online

Electronic Arts (EA) plans to release a PC-only massively multiplayer racing game called Need for Speed World, states the Guardian.co.uk.

The game will have dedicated servers in Europe and the US; however the servers will be limited to 10 000 players each.

Need for Speed World is now in open beta and is expected to be EA's latest attempt to seek alternative payment models for its games.

Intel unveils 32-core processor

Intel will ship a 32-core server processor that combines traditional x86 technology with cores that specialise in parallel workloads, says IT Pro Portal.

These will be available for development purposes over the next few months and it is likely that they will be targeted at universities and advanced educational institutions initially.

The chips, code-named Knights Ferry, are manufactured using 22 nanometre technology and run at 1.2GHz and are based on integrated core architecture.
