Sharp has released the largest commercially sold TV to the South African market.

The 90-inch AQUOS LED TV, which weighs 64kg and measures 2 x 1.2m, was unveiled at an event at Montecasino on Monday.

"With thousands of televisions sold across the region, and a very strong appetite among South African customers for modern technology, we believe the 90-inch AQUOS LED TV completes our product offering in SA, now ranging from 60-inch to 90-inch TVs", said Tsuneyoshi Miyake, DGM of the consumer electronics division at Sharp Middle East.

According to Sharp, the brand has experienced a steep increase in demand in the large-screen TV segment.

"What differentiates us from our competition is our passion for LED/LCD technology, which, together with our brand values, helps us offer consumers state-of-the-art products priced to meet consumers' aspirations," explained Rohit Khot, DGM of sales at Sharp's consumer electronics division for the Middle East.

The AQUOS TV features the brand's X-Gen panel, which offers image contrast quality at much lower power consumption. The TV comes with UV2A technology, which controls UV light.

According to Sharp, every AQUOS comes with capabilities. A Mobile HD Link (MHL) connects users' mobile phones with their Sharp TVs and uses the remote to control apps and content, while charging the mobile device.

The LED TV will be available through Sharp's official network across SA.

The AQUOS for R250 000, and according to Khot, closer to 1 000 units of the mammoth TV have already been sold in the Middle East market.
