Siemens predicts green order flood

The economic crisis seems to have a significant upside for companies in the energy efficiency business, reports EETimes.

German industry giant Siemens AG expects orders in the range of EUR6 billion over the next couple of years in this segment alone.

Stimulus packages from governments around the world are the main driver for green orders, said Siemens CEO Peter Loescher.

NetApp unveils green innovation centre

Storage player NetApp has set up NetApp Innovation Centre (NIC), where customers can walk in and accurately assess measurable benefits of advanced technology in their centre environments, states Silicon India.

This 390-rack centre, in which NetApp has invested $20 million, delivers a power usage ratio of 1.55, which can be compared with the industry average ratio of 2.5, thereby addressing the green IT requirements in the growing industry.

The NIC is collocated with the NetApp engineering centre in Bangalore.

Engineer Twitters to go green

A computer engineer has wired up his house to a social messaging site so it can tell him how much electricity and water his family use in a bid to lead a more eco-friendly life, says TeleText.

Andy Stanford-Clark fitted a network of sensors in every room of his home on the Isle of Wight, Hants, which sends updates of activity to his mobile phone via Internet site Twitter.

The 16th-century thatched cottage sends information such as "bathroom heater turned on", "gym temperature is cold" or "mouse caught in study" to help his family save money and the planet.
