Siemens supplies VOIP telephony solution to Northwest government

In a move that offers significant telecommunications cost savings and greater efficiencies for the government of the Northwest province, Siemens Communications Enterprise Networks - as part of the Siemens-Telkom Alliance - has been awarded a R8.5 million tender for the supply, installation and commissioning of an IP (Internet Protocol) telephony network.

Branden Chalmers, Siemens Communications account manager for Telkom government, says this state-of-the-art VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) telephony solution includes a Siemens HiPath 4000 switch with Siemens IP handsets for approximately 2 500 users.

"As part of the tender, Siemens has started work on installing a temporary telecommunications solution that will meet the needs of the Northwest government until the permanent system is fully commissioned in approximately 17 months time," he says.

According to Chalmers, by putting the telephony solution onto the Northwest government's large existing IT backbone that has been, for the most part, underutilised, the government has been able to realise greater cost savings in external call charges as well as no charges for internal communications.

"With this latest tender, we have been able to reinforce our relationship with the Northwest government and with Telkom," he concludes.
