In this edition of the Worldwide Wrap: UK company creates the country's first SIM card that allows people to jump between networks; and rebellious Reddit users swamp the site with derogatory comments about staff.

SIM card allows users to jump networks

A UK company, 24 Seven, claims to have created the country's first SIM card that allows people to jump between networks. The cards will search out the strongest signal from O2, Vodafone, and EE, which comprises Orange and T-Mobile.

The aim is to eliminate mobile "not-spots" or zones where there is very poor or no coverage at all, typically in rural areas.

Reddit users rebel

Rebellious Reddit users have swamped the site with derogatory comments about staff and images of overweight people after its decision to ban several sub-forums.

On Reddit's r/all page there was an overnight deluge of derogatory postings about Ellen Pao, the interim chief executive, who has led a campaign to clean up harassment on the site. Five sub-reddits were banned in total: two which made fat-shaming comments, one racist, one transphobic and one which targeted gamers.

Microsoft, Oculus deal

Facebook-owned Oculus VR held its "Step Into The Rift" event yesterday, when it introduced a new deal with Microsoft as it prepares to unveil the first consumer version of the Oculus Rift, its virtual reality headset, early next year.

The first Oculus Rift will come with an Xbox One controller and Xbox adapter so Xbox One games can be played through a VR headset. Xbox chief Phil Spencer also announced Oculus will support Windows 10 right out of the box.

Google smart city start-up

Google's tentacles are set to creep into a new area of people's lives with the creation of Sidewalk Labs, a smart cities start-up, which will build and incubate technologies to help governments run their urban areas more efficiently.

It will "develop technology at the intersection of the physical and worlds, with a focus on improving city life for residents, businesses, and governments".

Smart bikini

French company Spinali Design has released a bikini with an embedded sensor that warns the user when too much time has been spent in the sun.

The sensor will send an to the user's phone when it thinks the user has been out long enough, giving the user time to cover up before any lasting effects occur.
