Few companies are actively managing the subscriber identity module (SIM) cards installed in business phones and 3G modems, and most are running the risk of data loss and theft as a result, says Magix Integration director Amir Lubashevsky.
He reminds that SIM cards are enterprise hardware containing valuable data and should be managed accordingly.
"Most sales people have all their customer names and numbers on their SIM cards. When they leave the company, where does that data go? What happens to the card itself?" he asks.
"A 32k card can contain quite a few names, numbers and short messages," Lubashevsky adds.
In addition, more can be stored on the mobile phone itself. He suggests that mobile phones and their SIM cards be considered part of the enterprise storage architecture and be properly decommissioned at the end of their lives.
"SIM cards and phones must be erased on decommissioning. In addition, the data should be backed up regularly."
