ProScan Systems, sole distributor for Intermec products in southern Africa, announces the availability of Wavelink`s Avalanche mobile device management software, which makes it easy to deploy and maintain Intermec barcode printers, wireless access points, scanners and mobile computers.
Intermec`s newly formed partnership with remote device management specialist, Wavelink, allows customers with multiple network devices to upgrade and configure device software remotely, saving the time and cost of manual, one-at-a-time upgrades. The remote management capabilities of Avalanche also eliminate the need for workers to physically "dock" devices, greatly increasing user efficiency while reducing the total cost of ownership.
The Intermec and Wavelink Avalanche utility provides device configuration, software version management and asset tracking for mobile computers. The standalone management software solution can be used for simultaneous management of different types and brands of mobile devices.
Andrew Fosbrook, Managing Director of ProScan, comments: "As devices are constantly visible under Avalanche, you can immediately react and make changes in operations without worrying about how you are going to update the software applications on mobile computers. From single or multiple locations, you can change any device setting ranging from volume, screen brightness, radio setup and security, TCP/IP network settings, bar code scanning configurations, and peripherals like serially connected devices."
Avalanche seamlessly configures devices, synchronises software files, and automatically updates firmware and system files across a wired network, WLAN, WWAN, or even a dial-up link. This minimises the time IT staff spend on the intensive process of updating devices through manual operations with memory cards or direct cable connections. It also potentially eliminates duplication of effort and ensures that all locations and sites are adhering to standards and processes.
Users can also get real-time visibility of all mobile devices under management control. Asset lists and properties can be saved in table format to track assets over time and can also be used as input into automated asset reporting systems. Reports and logs can be exported to Excel or other applications. These reports show what devices are active on the network and the physical attributes of each individual device.
Because the software and enablers are pre-loaded on new products like the Intermec 700 series and CK30 handheld terminals and the CV60 vehicle-mount terminal, ProScan customers need only to purchase a software licence to activate the powerful device management system.
ProScan and Intermec now offer Wavelink Studio COM and Studio EDGE software utilities preloaded onto devices including the CK30, 700 Colour and Antares 2415, 2425, and 2455 handhelds. Studio COM enables developers to build constantly-connected applications for deployment in a dedicated Windows-based client-server environment. It consists of libraries that support COM-based languages such as Visual Basic, Visual C, Visual FoxPro, Delphi, and PowerBuilder. With Studio COM there is no need to learn another programming language or development environment specific to wireless devices or networks.
Wavelink Studio EDGE enables developers to build wireless applications running in a Java environment. Using Studio EDGE, devices can move in and out of a wireless network while maintaining full applications processing capabilities, thereby reducing device downtime and improving user flexibility. As a result it is ideal for WLAN, WWAN and roaming between hybrid WLAN/WWAN environments.
