Having begun operations on 1 April, the State IT Agency (Sita) has taken its strategic direction further with a proposed smart card system and the improvement of communication between the public and government.
The card system will allow state departments access to information such as medical records or driver history, which will speed up general day-to-day applications and administration.
A focal point of the plan is to bring the South African government online, making it possible for the public to apply for services via the Internet. Sita believes the response from the public will be positive because routine problems such as time delays and queues could be something of the past.
The agency made the announcement as part of its medium- to long-term business strategy, the main focus of which is to provide an efficient and cost-effective information service to the public.
Sita was established as a private company with the state as sole shareholder and offers services to government departments. Board members are collectively responsible for offering strategic planning and advice to government departments.
