SITA's KwaZulu-Natal regional office has completed network installations at several KwaZulu-Natal government buildings in the past month. The organisation employed a BEE partner of First Technologies, CHM Vuwani, to complete the project.
Predominantly SITA installed cabling and network infrastructure, as well as server installations and migrating new users and workstations to new client premises across the province. At the provincial Department of Health's Grey Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, SITA did not only upgrade facility from a secondary to a tertiary institution, but also readied it as a training facility in the region.
"To reach that stage, the hospital first upgraded its networking backbone infrastructure, before further developments are done," says Johnny Burger, SITA's technical manager in the province.
This project involves the laying of 10km fibre optic cable. Later, the department will implement a new Hospital Information System, as well as modify and grow its existing systems.
In Vryheid, networks were installed for the Department of Education at schools and public institutions. Further, 98 network points and hardware were installed in the Pietermaritzburg regional office.
At the Department of Traditional and Local Government, says Graeme Norton, SITA Regional Manager KwaZulu-Natal, data cabinets were replaced, network infrastructure revamped and fibre redundant links installed. "In addition we upgraded the department's network."
Additional projects were also completed at the Department of Finance's Treasury House and Department of Health's Natalia Building.
There are other projects in the pipeline, says Johnny, among them the upgrading of the backbone infrastructure for the Office of the Premier buildings in Ulundi. "We estimate that the project will be worth about R4 million. However, we are still busy with the planning and costing of the infrastructure."
