Since its establishment in 1999 SITA has placed high emphasis on training - mainly the development and implementation of extensive training programmes in order to give substance to its commitment towards empowering the citizens of South Africa. The Learnership Programme, which was launched in 1999, is one of these initiatives
According to Ms Ansie Liebenberg - Manager for the SITA Learnership programme - the programme focuses on two major target groups. These are the pre-employed:
Training individuals who have just finished their studies in IT and now need experience to effectively become part of the IT arena, and the employed:
Training of the already employed with the outset of re-skilling and maximising the IT workforce to sustain the heavy load of IT needs within South Africa.
"The programme involves a number of business partnerships between SITA and respected IT organisations whereby SITA provides practical training and the other institutions provide the theoretical training", Liebenberg said.
Learners are placed within the various environments of SITA to receive hands-on training and to measure their performance in real-life situations. After completion of their training learners are placed at IT firms through an agency.
SITA, in keeping to its aim to create the required skilled resources within Government and the IT arena as fast as possible has subsequently maximised the intake of students from 76 to 300 in the period 1999 - 2000. The majority of the learners has already been placed in SITA and negotiations (for placement) with respective IT companies around the country started in August 2000.
SITA has also been thanked on numerous occasions for the active role it is playing to ensure growth in skilled resources.
