SkyEdge deployed in Bolivia

Gilat Satellite Networks is to deploy a SkyAbis GSM cellular backhaul network in Bolivia, states Market Watch.

The new network, based on Gilat's SkyEdge II platform, enables the extension of network coverage to remote regions of the country where cellular connectivity was previously unavailable due to economic constraints.

Following the successful deployment of the initial phase of the network, which provides cellular backhaul services to 50 base station sites in the country, the operator is currently expanding the network to cover an additional 50 sites.

TDS falls 56%

Telephone and Systems' (TDS) third-quarter net income fell 56% on weak performance from its wireline business, despite strong results from its unit, US Cellular, reports CNN Money.

The telecommunications holding company, which owns US Cellular and several other cellphone and local US phone companies, also said its board authorised the repurchase of up to $250 million in shares, to expire in November 2011.

TDS posted net income of $101.2 million, or 87 cents a share, down from $231.7 million, or $1.93 a share, a year earlier. The latest results included US Cellular's results as well as a $31.7 million gain from Verizon Wireless' acquisition of Rural Cellular, in August.

Agito wins cellular award

Agito Networks won a gold star award from MobileVillage for its RoamAnywhere router, in the fixed mobile convergence category, says Market Watch.

The seventh annual Mobile Star Awards programme honours top companies, products, deployments, and leaders in mobile and wireless technology, and this year saw more than 2 300 votes.

The RoamAnywhere mobility router merges WiFi, cellular, IP telephony, and location information, improving the accessibility and responsiveness of mobile workers.
