Skynet Express Couriers has contracted with Progress Software independent software vendor StarTrak Systems to develop a custom-built track-and-trace system (TTS) for its barcoded parcel deliveries. The system has been developed to track freight through Skynet`s 13 branches nationwide. StarTrak`s system, developed using Progress tools, enables Skynet branches to communicate details of freight sent and received. Skynet can determine the exact location and full history of any parcel recorded on the system.
The speed of loading and unloading has been enhanced and parcel data accuracy improved. The use of barcodes and scanning aids the system in providing feedback to users on the floor. It interfaces with Skynet`s accounting system and customised invoicing, automated weighing and measuring devices and the company`s international tracking software. Skynet plans to enhance the system in line with client change requests.
All parcels are now packed for the correct destinations and errors trapped before they can impact parcel routing.
"StarTrak`s TTS allows us real-time access to data, our customer service has improved and there is a reduction in query handling and advanced exception reporting," says Gail Evans, IT manager at Skynet. "The system can scale to manage very high volumes of data.
"We chose this customised system because it automates and eradicates our manual processes, it enables us to access data online and it is paperless," adds Evans.
"Our solution was driven by the needs of Skynet`s clients. We chose this approach, rather than forcing them to operate their business on pre-developed systems," says Jean de Klerk, director at StarTrak.
