Skype fights back copyright claim

Voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) giant, Skype is embroiled in a trademark dispute with BSkyB, which is claiming ownership over the Sky mark, reports Broadband TV News.

The Trademarks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union (OHIM) ruled in favour of BSkyB in an objection against Skype's famous bubble logo.

Skype says it intends to appeal against the ruling, in the first instance to the OHIM Board of Appeal, and if necessary to the General Court at the Court of Justice of the European Community.

Facebook gets VOIP app

Vonage has released an application for iPhone and Android mobile phones that enables users to make free VOIP calls between Facebook users, states Trivalleycentral.com.

In tests between a few phones in New York, call quality varied. On an iPhone 3GS, audio delays made the calls impracticable.

Marc Lefar, the CEO of Vonage says the company may later charge for the ability to call land lines and send text messages. Versions for BlackBerry phones and for Windows and Mac computers are coming.

Mobile spending to pass broadband

By 2015, the US will spend more money annually on mobile than on all fixed-line communications, not counting enterprise services, according to Pyramid Research, says PC World.

Spending on communications services in the US will rise from $362.0 billion in 2010 to $410.2 billion in 2015, according to Pyramid analyst Ozgur Aytar.

Its forecast that by 2015, 51% of the spending will be on mobile and only 49% on fixed-line connections, says Aytar.
