E-learning initiatives in South Africa need to be interactive and adapt to the needs of learners at scale, says Toni Cavanagh, development director at Virtual Learning Africa (VLA).
According to Cavanagh, traditional e-learning offers a one-size-fits-all approach, still operates on a "textbook behind a glass" principle, and failed at humanising the learning process.
Cavanagh says adaptive e-learning, which seamlessly integrates with any existing learning management system, is the next advancement in the learning experience.
"In order to really meet the needs of learners, courses need to be interactive, engaging, relevant to the user needs and adaptive," says Cavanagh.
"By allowing for the creation of a personalised learning experience, adaptive e-learning emulates the talent of great teachers who are able to adjust their online lessons to the needs of their learners."
To advance adaptive e-learning in South Africa, VLA has partnered with Smart Sparrow.
Smart Sparrow is an Australian education technology company that has pioneered adaptive e-learning, claims VLA.
Smart Sparrow's platforms allow educators and trainers to generate lessons, which can be created, deployed, utilised and analysed from anywhere by anyone, reads a statement.
Cavanagh says the platform was a perfect addition to VLA's portfolio of e-learning solutions and to introduce adaptive e-learning to the local market.
"There are plenty of wizards and templates to work with, and the 'adaptivity' can be as sophisticated as the educator. To understand students, educators must understand their learning process. Smart Sparrow Analytics allows one to see the specific concepts students have mastered, as well as their misconceptions," says Cavanagh.
