As part of its push into the storage market, Sun Microsystems is working closely with partners to enable open management solutions for Sun storage devices.
The latest example of this is the announcement by Sun and BMC Software, a leading provider of enterprise management, of a Jiro technology-based software knowledge module that associates storage events with business processes.
The new PATROL Knowledge Module discovers, captures, stores and reports physical attributes and event information on the Jiro technology-enabled StorEdge T3 disk array. It can then be combined with the application intelligence available through PATROL to deliver seamless storage management for business functionalities.
"In the true definition of the network, anything should be able to plug into it and just work. This is what we can expect of today's dial tone, but is not yet a reality with web tone," comments Stefano Mattiello, managing director of Sun Microsystems SA. "Jiro technology can help make this a reality by facilitating true interoperability in open storage networks."
Commenting on the announce, Rob Clarkson, country manager BMC South Africa, says: "With their large installed base in SA this will be an exciting feature to enhance Sun's solutions."
In addition to the seamless manageability provided by the PATROL module, companies can benefit from the resultant greater end-user satisfaction.
Jiro technology simplified the development of PATROL with its capability to provide an open environment for creating and deploying storage management services and controlling, monitoring and configuring related data services.
"The Jiro technology is a freely available set of APIs that provides an infrastructure for building interoperable end-to-end storage management solution such as PATROL, offering smarter solutions to companies' storage headaches," concludes Mattiello.
