SmartForce, Microsoft adopt e-learning object strategy

Johannesburg, 27 Jul 2000

SmartForce is working with Microsoft in the development of an e-learning object in support of Microsoft`s Learning Resource Interchange (LRN) initiative.

SmartForce Africa MD Milton Goldschmidt says by defining each discrete element of its e-learning offerings as a unique e-learning object - and by creating the capability for customers to create their own objects in a variety of industry-standard formats - SmartForce`s framework will allow for the creation of an entirely unique e-learning application for each user, targeted at specific business requirements.

"The creation and implementation of an object-oriented strategy for online learning marks a significant point in the development and growth of the e-learning industry," says Goldschmidt.

"It permits any learning event to be broken down into its component parts, or learning objects. By developing SmartForce e-learning offerings in a learning object format, we will be able to deliver to each learner an even higher level of personalisation and precisely targeted e-learning solutions," he says.

"SmartForce`s support for Microsoft`s LRN initiative and the two vendors` key roles in defining the standards for e-learning objects demonstrates the companies leadership positions in the e-learning industry," continues Goldschmidt.

He says the two vendors will continue to work in unison to make it possible for the e-learning industry as a whole to move to the next level.

"At this point, e-learning system users can create and sophisticated, multi-faceted learning solutions that drive their business strategies.

"They will be able to create a personalised path through the e-learning application based on the learner`s specific prior experience and training.

"This provides learners with a rich set of learning experiences that are mapped to their own goals and learning styles.

"The key to a successful e-learning strategy is the ability to provide a fully interconnected, scalable e-learning application infrastructure," he continues.

"SmartForce has the capability to provide such an infrastructure, including the highest quality e-learning content and services through its 600 person strong development organisations."

Underpinning the SmartForce e-Learning object strategy is SmartForce`s e-learning Object Framework consisting of four e-learning object types: Instruction objects, Collaborative objects, Application objects, and Assessment objects.
