As part of its intensive ongoing focus on skills, Smart Storage Technologies (SmartStor), specialist open-systems data storage solutions company, has established a R500 000 training centre. The centre is being used to skill up engineers on VERITAS' Foundation Suite.
SmartStor's Rob Abrams recently became the first South African, and one of the first in the EMEA region, to be certified in VERITAS' Foundation Suite entrance exam, shortly followed by the certification of Steven Kenton at the beginning of October 2002. The Foundation Suite exam is required for any organisation desiring VERITAS Enterprise partnership status as well as entrance to the VERITAS Technical Services Partner Programme.
Using both the training centre and the company's R20 million SAN lab, Abrams and Kenton have been passing on their knowledge to the rest of SmartStor's engineers, with six qualified so far, all having passed with top marks, and another two set to become certified before mid-November.
"The training centre is kitted out with Sun equipment, including six UltraSPARC 5's, all equipped with an UltraSPARC Iii 400MHz Processor, 256MB RAM, two internal 36GB hard drives and five network interfaces," says Peter Blaauw, CEO of SmartStor.
"The workstations are connected to the fibre channel disk array in the SAN lab via optical cables, allowing each to see seven or eight virtual disks, which are needed for most of the exercises in this course.
"This training and the internal transfer of skills is extremely significant for SmartStor, not only in terms of our critical partnership with VERITAS, but also as an integral component of our ongoing commitment to market development and training," says Blaauw.
