Harmonic Computer Services has launched a black-owned company, Harmonic Mobile Solutions, to leverage off its experience in the mobile communications space, says Harmonic Mobile Solutions MD Walter Pretorius.

Pretorius says Harmonic Computer Services has traditionally provided barcode and point-of-sale hardware, and although it is a small company, had a turnover of R9.7 million last year.

"Harmonic Mobile Solutions was formed to provide an end-to-end solution, with Harmonic Computer Services providing the hardware and Mobile Solutions providing management .

"As a BEE [black economic empowerment] company, Harmonic mobile solutions will also be well placed to acquire more mobile-specific business in the corporate and government sectors. The company has applied for a number of government tenders for the provision of asset management systems as well as mobile devices to track stock. We are hoping through our BEE company status and the provision of a total solution to be able to government in these areas."

Pretorius says a big project for Harmonic Mobile Solutions has been its tyre management system, which runs on a personal digital assistant (PDA).

"One of our clients, Maxiprest Tyres, is now using PDAs to do assessments on company fleets. Whereas the assessment and report previously took seven days to complete, it is now done within a matter of minutes on PDAs, and a report and recommendation is then given to the company`s fleet manager," he says.

By closing the gaps of sales and revenue that Harmonic Computer Services wasn`t able to provide and presuming Harmonic Mobile Solutions is awarded some of the tenders it has bid for, Pretorius says he hopes the company will turn over between R7.5 million and R10 million by the end of its financial year.
