SMEs ditch tape

One fifth (22%) of UK SMEs are opting for online backup software and gradually ditching tape, according to figures from IT support firm Connect, Channel Web reports.

Conducted by an independent research company on behalf of Connect, 151 UK companies in a range of sectors were questioned.

As well as finding that double the amount of SMEs use online backup compared to last year, Connect also found a further 20% of companies were expecting to make the switch within the next three years.

MS reveals SME servers

Microsoft India has made available Windows Small Business Server 2008 (SBS 2008) and Windows Essential Business Server 2008 (EBS 2008), reports MeriNews.

The new Window server is an updated integration of infrastructure server technologies for small business and EBS 2008 is Microsoft's first offering tailored to mid-sized businesses.

“Around the world, small and mid-size businesses are the engine that drives economic growth and opportunity,” said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft.

SMEs get managed services

More SMEs are turning to managed services, especially during the current economic climate, according to SME Web.

Managed services enable SMEs to have access to a wide range of technology as an operational line cost, rather than a major capital investment.

However, it would be wrong to look at managed services just in the context of cost savings: looking beyond the initial impact on the bottom-line, this new approach to delivering technology has far-reaching operational advantages.
