SMS effective in time of crisis

Johannesburg, 01 Sep 2003

The recent Internet fraud case plaguing the banking industry lends a strong case for the effectiveness of SMS as a critical business communications medium at a time of crisis. Capable of addressing a very large audience timeously and cost efficiently, SMS messaging has become the most efficient way to communicate with customers.

Barry Prinsloo, sales director at SMS Cellular Services, providers of the CellSys SMS technology says: "SMS communications is cheaper than any other customer relationship tool and can be used to quickly allay panic and assure customers of their valued patronage."

SMS has moved beyond being a personal messaging tool and is now being embraced as an effective business communication tool.

"Mobile phones are an integral part of our lives. We can count on the fact that a mobile phone is nearly always with the user, therefore information communicated via SMS easily reaches the recipient wherever they are, with the advantage of remaining in the phone's memory for future referral.

Keeping customers updated or alerting them of an eminent crisis, as in the recent bank fraud case, could save the organisation's reputation, sustaining healthy customer relations.

"In addition to being a communication tool, SMS messaging technology can be applied as an alerting service where banks alert their clients to transactions happening on their account", says Prinsloo.

"It would be an oversight for organisations not to incorporate SMS communication into their business strategy. The biggest barrier to implementing this technology is the paradigm shift decision makers need to make in understanding that SMS technology can radically improve the way a business manages its processes, and can be used as a mission critical application," concluded Prinsloo.

SMS Cellular Services has for a number of years been providing SMS solutions to various large corporates that have achieved significant cost savings using SMS technology.

The Cellsys infrastructure, with multiple physical and port connections, allows for the delivery of SMS messaging at rates of up to 1000 per minute, more than sufficient for business needs. The solution is easily deployable and can be integrated with applications via a wide range of interfaces.

The CellSys solution currently meets entry-level business communication needs as well as multi-national enterprise requirements. As the market grows, the CellSys infrastructure is ready to fire on all cylinders for a new world in communication technology."
