Service-oriented architecture (SOA), corporate and convergence are driving IT services spend in SA, according to a recent BMI-TechKnowledge report. The IT services market is expected to grow by 6.4% between 2006 and 2011.

Industry players say this is not surprising, since SOA comes to the market with the promise of leveraging IT to become more agile, thereby making organisations more responsive in an ever-changing global economy. They also agree SOA is not rocket science; however, it is also not easy to implement.

The ITWeb Service-Oriented Architecture 2007 Conference aims to tackle the issues surrounding the concept, as well as provide delegates with practical strategies in overcoming the challenges companies face when attempting to deploy a service architecture.

More information about the ITWeb Service-Oriented Architecture 2007 Conference, which takes place on 19 September at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, is available online.

Teresa Jones, an analyst at Butler Group, will headline this year's event with her discussion on the infrastructure requirements for successful SOA deployments. She will be joined by Zimele Ndlela, GM of IT at City Power, and Neil Cave, a senior consultant for technology integration at Deloitte Consulting, who will discuss a case study on City Power's implementation of SOA.

Luc Vogeleer, head of the SOA Competency Centre at HP, will present: "Is your SOA agile or fragile?" David Bressler, from the office of the CTO at Sonic Software, will deal with aligning processes and services in an SOA environment.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to attend several breakaway sessions, which will be mediated by well-known South African industry players.

Joe Ruthven, business development manager for SOA at IBM SA; Simon Carpenter, director of strategic initiatives from SAP SA; Simon Harris, platform strategist at Microsoft SA; and Ezra Kahimbaara, SOA architect at Software AG, are among the players to share insight in these tracks.
