Society furthers nanotech

The Society for the Study of Nanoscience and Emerging Technologies (S-NET) is poised to become an international organisation to promote open intellectual exchange towards the advancement of knowledge and understanding of nanotechnologies in society, reports Nanowerk.

S-NET represents diverse communities, viewpoints, and methodologies in the social sciences and humanities.

It welcomes contributions from scientists and engineers that advance the critical reflection of nanotechnologies and related developments.

IBM looks ahead

IBM has unveiled a list of five innovations, which it believes have the potential to change the way people work, live and play, says VNU Net.

The Next Five in Five list is the third of its kind, and is based on studies of market and societal trends, as well as the firm's own emerging technologies.

IBM predicts energy-saving solar technology will soon be built into products such as pavements, paint, rooftops and windows. The cost of developing such solutions is coming down, the company said, and solar cells are now slim enough to be printed onto a wide variety of surfaces.

NFL experiments with 3D HD

The American National Football League (NFL) will trial high-definition 3D production and presentation technology next week, by broadcasting Thursday night's game between the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders in 3D HD to movie theatres in Boston, Los Angeles and New York, states Broadcasting & Cable.

The NFL will be the second major American sports league to experiment with 3D HD technology for live broadcasts, following the National Basketball Association.

The 4 December game will be produced and transmitted in 3D HD by specialist firm 3ality of Burbank, California.
