Software implementations must deliver high business value

Johannesburg, 13 Oct 2000

Giving enterprises high business value for a implementation is essential to growth and success in today`s B2B-driven, e-business economy. Technology alone will not win the day. Understanding these imperatives and responding to them has been fundamental to the success of Iona Technologies in 2000.

That is the summary from analyst company Hurwitz Group reporting on Irish-based Iona, which has undergone a sea change in the last nine months and become one of the most successful software companies in the world. Summarising Iona`s successes this year, Hurwitz notes:

  • Key to Iona`s success is its commitment to support for computing standards, including J2EE, XML, SOAP and CORBA. "Iona is effectively guaranteeing its customers that current infrastructures will be usable for the future and that future infrastructures will remain highly extensible as the enterprise develops."

  • Its "strong transition from a technology provider to more of a solutions provider".

"Take a look again at a revised Iona," comments Hurwitz. "Here`s a company that has successfully leveraged its core competency into a new dimension of software. With the best object request broker in the market in its back pocket, Iona has struck out to offer new solutions to its customers."

In the last nine months, Iona has registered a number of milestones:

  • It released the iPortal Server, the Web-facing component of Iona`senterprise portal suite that integrates back-end systems with Web applications, and the last piece of the iPortal Suite;

  • its iPortal Application Server received the "Best of Show" at Application Development 2000;

  • it a number of large international deals for iPortal Suite; and it had its greatest quarter ever, announcing a $34,7 million second quarter, with earnings of $4,5 million or $,20 per share.

"Iona`s iPortal shows great depth and breadth for enabling an enterprise to compete in B2B e-business," Hurwitz adds. "In addition, not only are the award-givers bearing out the strength of Iona products, but the critical examples and the strong financial results also show that the market is indeed gaining high value from Iona. It takes more than hype to be a successful software company. Particularly for a company delving out into new spaces, a high business-value solution play carries a lot of weight in the market."

"We have worked with Iona for more than five years," says Themi Themistocleous, director of local Iona distributor CCH Software Development. "In this period we have seen many customers derive significant value from their Iona investments, and we expect their strong portal focus to extend their market lead."
