Dell South Africa has for the second year partnered with Humana People to People in South Africa (HPP-SA), a non-profit organisation that focuses on creating opportunities for underprivileged communities.
At the handover, which took place at Munsieville, west of Johannesburg, Dell South Africa made an investment valued at R1 million to Humana People to People. R800 000 is a financial donation and the remaining R200 000 is being used for equipment, which will include desktops, monitors, speakers and Webcams.
“Dell South Africa invests a percentage of every rand spent by its customers into various initiatives aimed at driving transformation in South Africa.
“Technology is an essential tool to bridge the digital divide and Dell is striving to make technology as accessible as possible to rural communities,” said Rubiena Duarte, head of transformation at the Dell SA Development Fund.
Through this donation, learners will receive basic computer skills and academic training in mathematics, science and other related school subjects, using computer generated learner programmes. All four of Humana's centres in Soweto, the Westrand District and KwaZulu-Natal will benefit from this donation. In 2009, Dell made a similar investment of over R1 million. Additionally, last year Dell also hosted a Christmas party in Munsieville for more than 200 children from the three Gauteng centres, and Dell staff volunteered their time to assist in giving each child a gift, a sweet pack, lunch and providing entertainment.
“Together with Humana People to People South Africa, Dell hopes to provide academic education as well as HIV/Aids training and counselling to young learners living in underprivileged communities. This will empower these learners to receive better job opportunities, and hopefully it will also assist in the fight against crime and abuse,” added Duarte.
Founded on the idea of Solidarity Humanism, Humana People to People's approach is comprehensive, grassroots-based and multi-disciplinary, which encourages the individual to become the organising force in creating routes out of poverty.
